Goliath

As I was tending my sheep one day,
I heard my father call to say.
Take this wine and cheese,
to your brothers, for me it will please.

And bring good news again to me.
For your brothers are with the army .
As the servants loaded the wagon.
I prayed the Lord my father I would see again.

As we approached the armies I could see.
They looked strong and mighty to me.
The enemy I could see across the valley,
through the army I searched for my family.

I greeted my brothers with glee.
When in the valley, Goliath I did see.
Come to challenge the armies of God.
Why do you run? I thought it odd.

That no one challenge this uncircumcised Philistine.
So I ask, What is to be?
For the one who kills this Philistine.
Who defies God’s army.

My brothers mocked me,
For asking the reward of God to me.
But the captain could see,
The Spirit of God on me.

Take this lad to the King,
For I perceive he will cause Israel to sing.
King Saul, offered his armor,
But I declined his offer.

I rehearsed to the King,
my battle with the lion and the bear.
To win the hand of his daughter fair.
This uncircumcised Philistine will join them there.

With the blessing of the King,
I ran picking up rocks for my sling.
Through the army I charged,
Praying to the Lord for Israel to be delivered,

From this defiant Philistine.
I shouted as I ran, Lord deliver me.
He through down his helmet and laughed at me.
Who is this dog I see?

Running to challenge my lords champion.
Lord I cried, deliver me, Abraham’s son.
And take this reproach from Israel.
And to all your victory I will tell.

With the might of God his vengeance left my sling.
I could hear the victory in my heart sing.
As Goliath fell to the ground.
In my heart Gods Spirit did pound.

With his own sward I took his head.
Israel shouted the victory at Gods hand.
Through the crowds I ran,
With Goliath’s head in hand.

To God be the glory,
for the telling of the story,
how he saved Israel today,
and saved my life to fight another day.
