Hunger
By Michelle G.
Somewhere right now a family struggles to survive,
they are just lucky to be alive.
The day begins with lack of sleep,
fixing a leaky roof does not come cheap.

At school the children gather round,
all they have is a stick and the ground.
If the teacher had one book to share a story,
I bet those little children would be in their glory.

Bare footed with blisters on their soles,
the clothes they wear are full of holes.
Shalonda can never go to school,
like so many others who will never learn the golden rule.

Shalonda remembers the day her Daddy died,
she will never forget how hard her Mommy cried.
This is when times got really rough,
Mommy can barely earn enough.

Tonight a family shares a bowl of rice.
They are thankful, but thinking,
some meat and vegetables sure would be nice.
However knowing that its pointless to complain,
all they have ever known is this hunger pain.
