Away, they’re sent, off to fight, On guard, alert, each sleepless night. It’s because of them, we safely stay Living life, like normal, day to day. When they have finished, duty done, Their life’s battle has just begun. They come back home to settle in. But life, like normal, does not begin. They are haunted by the dark refrain Of gunfire, blasts, and cries of pain, And of brothers lost in a senseless war. Whatever were they fighting for? And once they’re home, we forget They struggle to make their lives fit Into social circles, jobs, relations. Life, like normal, tries their patience. Often, things change drastically For the soldier who wants to be free Of terror in his dreams at night, Feeling that things just aren’t right, Memories that always linger, Twitches in the trigger finger, And looking all around, behind, For the enemy that’s in his mind. We must not forget the sacrifice Of each one who paid the price. For many battle scarred and maimed, Life won’t ever be the same. |
